About us

“CICER” is an acronym in Italian (Circolo Italiano Culturale e Ricreativo), meaning The Italian Circle of Culture and Recreation.Over 20 years ago, CICER founder, Anna Coupaud, set out to unite Italian expatriates living in Abu Dhabi. Through the support of other volunteer founders such as Lucia Strigi and Vera Macri, they worked together to offer social and cultural activities; as noted by the author Walter Siti, who mentions CICER in his 2013 novel, Il Canto del Diavolo (excerpt above).
Since inception, CICER has remained true to their core values, all the while adapting to a constantly evolving community in a rapidly developing country.  CICER welcomes all Italians moving to Abu Dhabi by helping them get settled and offering them an opportunity to learn what this country has to offer. CICER has several interest groups, focused on particular aspects of the expat experience, from culture to sport, cooking and art, language groups, and charity events. All members are invited to join in any activity of interest to socialize with other members of the Italian community.
